Seafair Half Marathon

Kenny ran his 1st half marathon (13.1 miles) this morning. He had a goal of doing it under 1 hour and 40 minutes. He ran it in 1 hour 41 minutes and 11 seconds.

He was working against a couple hurdles. His ankle has been hurting him for a couple weeks now and with his running streak (he has gone running at least 2 miles every day for 4 years) he isn't able to take time off of it to let it heal. The weather didn't cooperate with him very much. This weekend has been in the 90's here in Seattle. Saturday night was a tough one in our house. We couldn't get it cooled off very well. So there wasn't much sleeping going on. The race started at 7am, which helped with the heat a little bit this morning (but not with the no sleep part...he had to get up at 5am to get to the race). By the time he was done it was 80 degrees out.

The race started in the U district and ended in Bellevue. He ran across the 520 Bridge, which they haven't allowed since 1984. Overall, he enjoyed himself and is gearing up for a marathon in the future.

Aqua Tots I

Shane started his swimming lessons yesterday. It is 9 days in a row for 30 minutes a day. We are taking them at the outdoor community pool in Kirkland. Yep, I really do mean we. I get the pleasure of taking them with him. On the first day when she told us to blow bubbles in the water to show them how to do it, I had flashbacks of my childhood swimming lessons and remembered vividly not liking them much at all. I don't like to put my face in the water. Shane may not be the best at blowing bubbles at the end of this session, I'm not sure I'm the best example to follow.

Beyond my issues with getting in and out of the pool and the fact it has been 60 degrees outside, Shane is loving them. He only gets upset when he has to trade his toy in for something else. At times he would actually much rather play with his toy then kick, or blow bubbles or float on his back. But all in all he is doing great and I'm learning a thing or two about how to deal with him in the water. I just can't wait until the weather warms up and we aren't freezing cold the whole time!!

Kenny came and watched us today. The pool is just a couple minutes from his work. He was able to take some pictures and video. When Shane first saw him all he wanted to do was point and look at Dad.

Babies, Babies Everywhere

Our friends and family have been busy having babies! Congrats to all of the families!!

Zachary Michael Hackley (Michelle and Mike Hackley, friends from San Diego)
May 31st -- 9lbs

Rowan Hayes Loidhamer (Aaron and Amy Loidhamer, Jessica's Cousins)
June 10th -- 7lbs - 20ins

Maya Louise Edwards-Parker (Darren Parker and Stephanie Edwards-Parker, Kenny's Cousins who live in Michigan)
June 18 -- 7 lbs 8 oz - 19 inches

Stella Marie Cameron (KJ and Rebecca Cameron, friends who live in Reno)
June 22nd -- 8lbs 3ozs - 20ins

Here is a little birthday/family interesting fact...if you can follow along with my explanation. My cousin Aaron had his baby Rowan on Shane's birthday one year later then Shane. Kenny's sister Claire has a daughter, Meredith who was born on June 18th two years ago...the same day that Maya was born. Darren is Claire's cousin. So between my family and Kenny's family we both had 2nd cousins born on the exact day this month. I thought it was a little odd?!

Shane's Friends

Shane has been blessed at such a young age to have some great friends! Here are a few pictures of his buddies.

Lucas (5 years/neighbor) and Shane. Lucas is the coolest thing to Shane, he LOVES when he gets to play with Lucas. His eyes get really big and he wants to touch him. They are really cute together.

Cole (13 months/friend from play group) and Shane. Oddly they were actually sharing the blocks with each other.

Tavis (14 months/neighbor) and Shane in the background. They have a I want what you want relationship at this point.

Shane and Veraty (19 months/neighbor). Veraty is trying to make Shane feel better because he was crying. Now that Shane can get around better she isn't so sure she likes that he can get what she wants. They are funny to watch together.

Graham (14 months/from weekly play group). Shane has been known to make Graham cry with his loud "talking".

Stella (15 months/from weekly play group). She is the only girl in our playgroup and the oldest. She puts up with the boys nicely though.

Ellie (4 years/neighbor and Lucas' Sister) and Katie (4 years/neighbor and Tavis' Sister) Ellie and Shane have a little hugging game they play together....it's really cute. Katie is great with Shane. One time he was sleeping and she just couldn't get over that he couldn't come down and play with her.

Katie and Karma (4 years/neighbor and Veraty's Sister). Karma is very loving and likes to talk to Shane and see how he is doing.

Things You Probably Don't Need To Know...

1.Today Shane got his first pair of "walking shoes". We went big and made a trip to Nordstrom's. He got these cute little "See Kai Run" shoes. They took a picture of him in his new shoes and gave him a "Nordi" stuffed animal. He loves the Nordi guy and I love the shoes. All in all a happy experience.

2.Shane had his first taste of ice cream today. The doctor recommended it so that we can keep putting weight on him. Lucky guy! He enjoyed it, but not as much as the avocados he had for dinner.

3.Tooth #8 came in today.

4.Shane's fish Splash passed away this morning. RIP Splash.

12 month well baby check up

Shane had his 12 month well baby check up today. We were hoping he would weigh in at 20 pounds and jump up a few percentiles, but he didn't quite make it. He weighed 18lb and 9ozs which keeps him right on track with his normal 5% in weight. The doctor was very happy to see him stay on his curve. He is 29" long and that puts him in the 25%. We really wanted to be able to turn his car seat around for the road trip we have in a few weeks, but he needs to be 22lbs for that, so we'll be waiting until September at this rate.

What cracks me up is how many people lately have told me what a big boy he is. If you go by growth charts he is one of the smallest kids out there. I've decided it's his full head of hair that makes him seem so much older. He just sorta has a big boy look to him.

He "passed" with flying colors on the rest of his check up, except waving was one of the questions they asked me if he was doing. That is a big NO. He just doesn't seem to care about waving to people. I asked the doctor if I should be concerned and she said that he seemed very social to her so no she was not concerned. Yep, this kid is social, even if he can't wave he'll give you a big smile or babble some crazy nonsense at you. One way or another he'll make sure you know he is there.

Happy Father's Day

Hope all you Dad's out there had a good day or that you treated your Dad or Husband extra nice today. Kenny had a pretty good day I think. All of us (including Sadie, Dodger and Shane) pooled our money together and got Dad a cool green Mini I-Pod. He was excited about that. Later this afternoon we headed over to his Aunt and Uncle's house for some fun in the sun and water. Shane kicked it in the very warm kiddie pool along with his 2nd cousins Anna and Brooke.

Shane can't quite decide if the big pool is okay or not. One second he'll be laughing and smiling and the next he'll be crying and wanting out.

The spa was pretty much the favorite of all places to be. Nice warm bath water, how can you beat that! If you look closely, Shane is drinking the pool water from a little watering can. He just can't help himself...water must be drank...it doesn't matter where it comes from.

Magnuson Dog Park

We took Sadie today to the Magnuson Dog Park in Seattle. It is a completely fenced 9-acre dog park with a trail down to Lake Washington. She doesn't get to go to dog parks much these day because we can't take Dodger and if the park isn't fully secure we don't trust her....she is a runner. This park was perfect for her. It was really secure and ended with a dip in the lake. She would run ahead of us and then turn around and make sure we were coming. A few times she would think that she had lost us and start running up to other people sniffing them saying "are you my people?" and looking all confused until she heard us calling her and then would run up to us and act like "oh, there you are, I was looking for you." We were very proud of her. We hope someday we can get Dodger over his dog aggression and be able to take him, too.

A lady walked up to Sadie and said "You are one happy dog!" Yes, she was!!

Shane loves watching all the dogs run around.

My 1st Necklace!

I made my very own necklace this evening with help from my expert friend Julie. The first time I meet Julie, when we moved into the cul-de-sac, I noticed the most beautiful necklace she had on. I knew I wanted one of those and found out that she made and sold them through her website Creative Jules. I got my first one as a Christmas gift from Kenny. I then have added to my collection since then. Julie decided that I should attempt to make my own. I was nervous, but think it turned out pretty good for my first time.

Thanks Julie for the support, encouragement and help!!

Dancing Boy

I've been teasing Shane because all of his friends have cute little dance moves, but he doesn't have any. The other day I put on a mixed CD of kids songs that he got for his birthday. When the 3rd song came on he started dancing. He did it again for Kenny the next day when I put another CD on. Now it's not quite "normal" kid dancing. He seems to have to hold onto the entertainment center in order to dance. The video will explain.

Happy Birthday Shane Kendall

Shane is officially 1 year old today! I looked up at the clock around 9:00 this morning which was just a little over 30 minutes after the little guy was born on this day 1 year ago. He's come a long way in a year...

-babbling to talking with a purpose even though we don't know what that purpose is yet

-rolling (which took him forever to figure out), to crawling and now walking

-tummy time (which he hated) to sitting up to standing up

-breast milk to formula to baby food to finger foods and now even trying to eat with a spoon

-maybe listening to a book for a second to loving all books

-kissing with a big open wet mouth to....well that hasn't changed yet

-not knowing his name to knowing it but not always responding to it

-not knowing what NO means to thinking it is one of the funniest words ever

-sleeping very little at night to sleeping 12 hours at night

Shane's 1st Birthday Party

We had Shane's 1st birthday party this weekend. It was a success. The rain held off for the most part. It wasn't warm out, but not to cold which allowed people to spend time out on the deck. Shane had no idea why all these people were in his house, but he didn't seem to mind the attention either. He had fun digging into his yummy gluten free cake made with love by his Mommy. Opening presents wasn't too bad, but he mostly just wanted the envelopes and the cards. That evening though the presents become lots of fun when he had so many new things to play with.

A big thanks to all our friends and family who came out to celebrate Shane's first year of life. Also, to my Mom and Dad for helping us out. I don't think we could have pulled it off with out your help.

Wearing his Birthday Boy crown with Mom before the party.

The kids engaged in a little craft project.

He was very interested in the flame on the candle.

Cake eating time!

Present time: this was a Curious George Jack-in-the-box he thought was really funny.

Play time after the party.
